Voyage is my last concrete poem and my first text-sound piece. I wrote a text in plain English that described a sort of entropic theory of psychosis, current at the time, the early 70's. The idea was that people in schizophrenic (and possibly psychedelic) states experienced a high degree of randomization of their sensory and cognitive processes. The text was also based on some peculiar personal experiences: walking on the sidewalk, with a stranger alongside, then turning and noticing that he had vanished. Or other anomalous events, which I suspected that many people had, but preferred to ignore, in an effort to keep reality more realistic, so to speak.
Having written the text, I began the process of entropizing and de-entropizing it, using a book of random numbers. At the beginning, the probability of any change was set very low,but it gradually increased so that the text became more and more garbled. Listeners have told me that at first they thought I was an incompetent bumbler, then perhaps drunk or drugged, later a madman, & finally a performance artist.
